It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, William Frederick Ballantine Church, KC. He passed away peacefully on April 23 2026, at Renfrew Victoria Hospital at the age of 92.

Born to the late Harold and Mildred Church of Orangeville, Bill grew up in Orangeville before leaving for London, Ontario to attend Western University. Bill went on to attend Osgoode Hall where he was called to the Bar in1960 and in 1978 he was appointed to the King’s Counsel.

In 1957 Bill met the love of his life Ann Winsor Brownrigg, on a cruise ship to Europe, where they became engaged shortly after. Bill loved his family. Predeceased by his beloved wife and life companion of 66 years, Ann Winsor Church, he treasured the time he spent with his four children - John, Doug, Julie and George - and eight grandchildren (Matt, Anna, Samantha, Christina, Alex, Sydney, Max and Miila), taking immense pride in each of them. His presence at family gatherings, his stories, his wit, and the way he made time for conversation and connection will be deeply missed.

Bill lived a life marked by dedication, sharp intellect, deep conviction, and unwavering love for his family. He was a man who cared deeply about the world around him and the people in it. Whether he was discussing the latest hockey game, debating politics, or sharing stories from his years in law, he brought passion, thoughtfulness, and humour to every conversation.

A lifelong lover of hockey, Bill’s connection to the sport began early and stayed with him throughout his life. He played simultaneously for the London Lou Balls and the University of Western, later going on to play senior-level hockey in Orangeville. His love of the game continued long after his playing days. In recognition of his many years of service as a provincial adjudicator, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Hockey Federation — an honour he was quietly proud of.

Bill was deeply committed to the law and to serving others. He practised law until the age of 75, defending people from all walks of life with fairness, compassion, and a strong sense of justice. For 23 years, he served as Town Solicitor for Orangeville, proudly following in the footsteps of his father and continuing a family tradition of service to the community.

He had an insatiable curiosity about the world and was an avid follower of both world affairs and domestic politics. He loved a good political discussion and was never short on thoughtful opinions, insights, or spirited debate. Sports, current events, and public life were among his great passions, and conversations with him were always lively and memorable.

He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, intelligence, and love, and will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to know him. The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date and donations can be made to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.
