Sean Andrew Mullins McMurtry, aged 54, passed away on May 23, 2026, in Ottawa. Sean was born in Toronto in 1972 and grew up there and in Calgary. An elite rugby athlete, he played for Western Canada High School, Calgary Irish Athletic Club, Banff Bears, and the Canadian Under 19 National Team. In his late 30s, he also led the Loyalist College Lancers to the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II Rugby Championships in 2009 and 2010 – thus earning a place in the OCAA Hall of Fame.
Sean shifted his career from hospitality to healthcare in 2006 and became a registered nurse. He worked at intensive care units in Belleville and then Smith Falls. His profound commitment to caring for others was evident among his legions of friends and coworkers.
Sean’s much-loved mother Jane died in 2019. He is survived by his father Robert (Monica); siblings Meghan (Matt), Angus (Neeta), Abbey (Nick); uncle Keith and aunt Jennifer; and many cousins: Jody, Brett, Heidi, Tanya, Janet, Jim, Harry, Jeannie, Erin, Michael, Tom, Tara, Tearney, John Justin, Matthew and Elana. He will also be remembered as a caring uncle by Quinn, Tagore, Dexter, Arjun, Nico, Rudy, Sienna and Grayson. He will be missed far more deeply and widely than this obituary can express.
A commemorative of Sean's life will take place in Toronto on Sunday July 12, 2026, from 2pm-4pm, at Noonan's Pub (formerly Dora Keogh), 141 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, Ontario.
