Reginald (Rex) Leonard Martin

1940 - 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Rex, at home, on July 5th, 2026.

Rex is survived by his beloved wife and lifelong companion Heather (Moores), his sons, Andrew and Steven, his daughter-in-law, Chantal and his grandchildren, Sebastien and Chloe, who knew him affectionately as “Masse.” Rex was predeced by his sisters; Florence (David) white and June (Keith) Winter. He will also be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbours, (former colleagues and students.)

Rex grew up overlooking the harbour in St. John’s, Newfoundland. After losing his mother Annie Janes, at the age of five, he learned early the importance of family, education, responsibility, and hard work. Encouraged by Vera Osborne and inspired by his father, also Reginald “Rex” Martin, he developed a lifelong interest of science and learning.

His academic ability earned him admission to Bishop Feild College and scholarships that carried him through to postdoctoral studies in physical chemistry. He completed his PhD at the University of Ottawa and his postdoctoral studies at Durham University in England.

Rex met Heather at Memorial University of Newfoundland. They married before moving overseas, where their sons, Andrew and Steven, were born. The young family travelled throughout Europe before returning to Canada and settling in Ottawa.

Rex spent 34 years teaching chemistry at Algonquin College. He served as Chairman of the Chemistry Department and the newly established Film Production Departments before returning to what he loved most: teaching.

Outside the classroom, Rex was more than active, in sports, gardening, multiple hobbies and active in his sons’ activities. In retirement, he and Heather enjoyed the cottage, where his favourite ritual was an early-morning paddle.

Rex will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, gifted teacher, loyal friend, generous neighbour, storyteller, and lifelong learner.

A private interment will take place.
