Obituary

Raymond Leonard Cunningham

January 29, 2026

Our beloved Ray passed away peacefully in the early hours of January 29, surrounded by love and comforted by the music of his favourite bluegrass guitarist, Doc Watson.

Born in 1942, Ray was raised in Bocabec, New Brunswick by his parents, Josie and Marvin, along with his siblings Leighton (Helen), Wayne, Dale (Lynn), Marilyn (late John), and Nancy (Paul). After coming to Ottawa to serve as Leighton's best man, he settled here. In time he met and married the adoring love of his life, and forever best friend, Bettyann. Together they enjoyed and inspired their blended family of six children, Brad (Karen), Sarah (Scott), Sheryl (Shad), David (Kelly), Brent (Anna) and the late Melanie. As Grampy, Grandpa and Bampe he showered love and life lessons on ten grandchildren including Ava, Scarlett, Jesse (Jeneva), Thomas, Emmett, Jenna, Justin (Christina), Erica, Laura and Brandon. The arrival of two great grands, Walker and Avi, brought added joy and delight.

Whether answering to Leonard or Ray, he was the same lovely, humble and generous man, sharing his passion for the outdoors from simple camping to RV life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening, tinkering with cars and fixing anything that needed fixing. While 'home' always meant Bocabec to him, Ray and Bettyann traveled widely, chasing bluegrass festivals and visiting family from coast to coast and across the ocean. Music was central to Ray's life, as a fan and exceptional guitar picker. It was the source of many friendships, most recently at Riverside Campground near Merrickville. There, he and Bettyann spent many fun days kayaking with Denise, followed by a cold beer on her deck.

Ray was so deeply loved by so many. We are grateful for all that he shared with us and will hold him in our hearts with each new day. A private celebration of life will follow at a later date.
