Pancruce McGriffin "Blakes" Theodore

"The Mighty Terra"

With deep sadness and loving remembrance, the family of Pancruce McGriffin Theodore, known to family and friends as "Blakes" or "Mac", wish to announce his passing on July 19, 2026 at the age of 86. Across his two homes – Saint Lucia and Ottawa - he was celebrated by his calypso stage name: The Mighty Terra. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Greselda, in 2000 and is survived by his children Alison, Nadia (Eric) and Aldrick (Sabrina), his siblings Callista, Patsy, Lucillia (deceased), Regina, Stowell, Daulton and Percita and his three grandchildren.

Born in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia Blakes discovered calypso as a boy, his musical skills and carnival orientation shaped by a deep appreciation for steel pan. As a student at St. Mary's College in Castries, he defied school rules to sing in the tents, drawing censure from the Presentation Brothers. Undeterred, he pressed on. He won his first Calypso Monarch title in 1959, launching an unmatched run of eight consecutive championships, a feat unequalled in Saint Lucia's history. He wrote, composed, and performed every song himself, including the well-loved "Wabeen Government," "Russian Astronaut," and "They Ban The Advocate.

His reign closed in 1966 after a contested judging decision. Having completed his undergraduate studies in Michigan, USA, Mac moved to Canada to pursue postgraduate studies. In Ottawa, he built a life with his beloved wife, Greselda - whom he had known since secondary school - and their children. He stayed closely rooted in the city's Caribbean community, becoming lead singer of The Flamingoes, believed to be the city's first Caribbean band on record. Through that community, he made sure his Ottawa born children grew up connected to both their Canadian and Saint Lucian identities. He raised them with a steady hand and a high bar - instilling discipline, a sense of responsibility, and the confidence to excel under any hardship.

An economist by training, he built a career with the Government of Canada, including Statistics Canada and Public Works and Government Services Canada. Following retirement, he returned to Saint Lucia to serve as the Deputy Director of the National Insurance Scheme. His contributions were honoured in 2025 with the Saint Lucia Medal of Merit (Gold) for long and meritorious service in the field of Education and Community Development. In 2021, his legacy was preserved in The Reign of Terra: The Mighty Terra and the Modern Calypso Movement in Saint Lucia, researched and compiled by Embert Charles and published by the Monsignor Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Lucia Cathedral and internment at Choc Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Diabetes Canada.
