Ruby Renetta Torrance
1914 - 2019
Peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, August 3rd in Ottawa, in her 106th year.
Ruby was predeceased by her brother Stanley (Louise), sister Helen, and her beloved son Thomas. Ruby was loved and cared for in her later years by her daughter-in-law Jeanie Torrance and the wonderful staff at the Richmond Care Home and Carlow House at St. Patrick’s Home. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Kelly and Patrick Torrance (Tania), her Troughton nieces and their families. Ruby loved her many great-grand-children, and she was always delighted to share their company.
Ruby lived in East York, Toronto for most of her life, where she worked as a secretary at the United Steelworkers of America for over 30 years. She retired to exercise each day, look fabulous for her age, travel the world, win countless hands of bridge, read libraries of books, grow gorgeous garden roses, raise daschunds, entertain friends and family and enjoy a cocktail each day at precisely 4 o’clock. At age 91, she moved to Ottawa where she joined her son “Tommy” and his wife Jeanie to share their home and continue the “cocktail hour” tradition...and bless all of our lives.
Family and friends are invited to a service followed by a reception to celebrate Ruby’s long life at 5 pm, on Friday, August 9th at Tubman Garden Chapel in Nepean at 3440 Richmond Road, K2H 8H7.
In memory of Ruby, please stop whatever you are doing at exactly 4 o’clock today. Take stock of what you’ve accomplished, pour yourself a favourite cocktail, and raise a glass to the beautiful, intelligent, hard-working and resilient women like Ruby who make our lives possible and sweet. Stay positive, kind, genuinely surprised, interested and gorgeous. If Ruby inspires you, a commitment to walking or swimming every day (or just being truly happy to see another person, and telling them so) would be greatly appreciated.
