Ret’d - Carleton Board of Education
After a meaningful life lived to the fullest with family and many friends, Gert (Gurt) Lemke returned to the arms of the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2019 in his eighty-seventh year. He has departed on his next great voyage, but has left us all with a legacy of immeasurable worth. He was our rock, and will remain so as we go forward and work to honour the values that he imparted upon us. He was constant, fair, caring, loving, attentive, passionate, poetic. He was that rare man whose actions truly reflected his deeply held beliefs, which made the lessons he taught us all the more meaningful. We bid him farewell with heavy hearts but also with profound gratitude that he has been part of our lives.
Gurt was the beloved husband of Johanna “Yoka” (nee Bakker) and a devoted father to his two sons, Christopher (Katherine Perez) of Calgary and Roger Anthony (Maria Gacesa) of Montreal. He was a proud Opa to his grandchildren Nathan and James, Margot, Larisa and Dane. He was predeceased by his parents Luise (Wosseck) and Edmund Lemke, and was the dear brother of Joachim (Ruth), the late Helga Zukowski (Heinz), and Edwin Lemke. He will also be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, USA and Germany.
His family would like to extend special thanks to Doctors Eapen, Capello and Canil as well as the Emergency and ICU staff of the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their compassionate care.
