FLETCHER, Henry Ernest (Ernie)
Veteran of the Korean War
Peacefully, on September 20, 2019, at the age of 87, with his beloved wife of 57 years Ruth (Moors) and loving family by his side.
Ernie was a devoted father and father-in-law to Kevin and Nancy (Stolze), Steve and Rose (Dicorato), and Krista and Eric (Scott), and the doting and fun-loving grandfather of William, Caleb, Sean, Hayleigh and Mya. He was a cherished brother and brother-in-law to Elsie Balfour, Lila Sinfield, Clifford and Kathleen, Stuart and Beverley, Shirley, Monique, Joan Moors and David Moors. Uncle Ernie will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Son of the late Willis and Edith (Hobbs), Ernie was predeceased by his twin brother Bert and by his siblings Bill, Isobel, Jack, and Clara.
Born in Shawville, and raised in Lowertown, Ernie served in the 25th Brigade of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He and Ruth raised their own family in Ottawa where he enjoyed an active and independent career as a mail carrier. He loved to spend long summer days at the family cottage, close to his siblings and large extended family, where he always seemed most content wandering through the fields with one or more of his adoring grandchildren in tow.
Special and sincere thanks to Ernie’s family physician Dr. Judy Chow, for her extraordinarily attentive care, and to the devoted caregivers at Retire-at-Home. It was their compassionate care that allowed Ernie and Ruth to stay together in their family home for these past few years. Family and friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes 3440 Richmond Road (between Baseline and Bayshore Drive), Ottawa, at 11:30am on Saturday, September 28, 2019. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow. Inurnment at Huntley United Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ernie’s memory to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation.
