Steve passed away at the Civic Hospital on Sunday, November 5th, 2017. Steve was born in Darlington, England, the son of Jack (deceased) and Nancy. Steve is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Mahlmann (Perry), their children Sam and Jack, and his brother Glenn Verrall. Steve is also survived by his loving partner, Lynda Kawall, Lynda’s children Michelle (Chris Mallette) and Lisa (Michael Murphy), and Lisa and Michael’s daughters Cadence and Dawn. Steve grew up in Hamilton where he began working at his father’s curling club. Sadly, Steve lost his father at the tender age of 19. Their close relationship had a profound impact on Steve’s life and might very well have been the determining factor in the career path that Steve chose. Steve went on to work at the Burlington Golf & Country Club for the golf course Superintendent. At 26 years of age, Steve became one of the youngest golf course Superintendents in Ontario at the Cataraqui Golf & Country Club. Steve would remain at Cataraqui through 1987, responsible for the golf course and six sheets of ice during the winter months. In 1988 Steve made the move to Ottawa to become the Golf Course Superintendent at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, a position he held until his untimely death. Steve was a consummate professional who will be deeply missed by the people he worked with every day and by the members at the Club. In April 2011, Steve and Lynda began their life together. Steve quickly became a beloved member of the family, befriending her daughters, and joking with her granddaughters. He enjoyed creating beautiful meals and memorable holiday traditions that are already missed. Weekends with Lynda were spent biking, going out with friends, or just staying in and enjoying each other’s company. Family members have expressed how happy they are that the two had found each other. Steve loved fine food, his dog Leo, nice clothes, his family & friends, running, The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, and – above all – Lynda. All are welcome to a Celebration of Steve’s Life on Wednesday, November 15th at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club, 1405 ch. d’Aylmer, Gatineau at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Charity of your choice in Steve’s name.
