Renie was one of the active members of Friends of the Future in the 1980s, group I had co-founded after attending the Global Conference on the Future in Toronto in 1982, I think it was. I especially enjoyed her presentation on the trip she took to South Africa. Her hosts displayed great discomfort at her curiosity of their apartheid regime. Although I lost touch when the group disbanded in the early '90s, I 'discovered' her living in our new neighbourhood along Rideau Street last summer, and invited her to our lively seniors discussion group at the Econolodge, "Friends of Uptown Rideau," which she attended a couple of times before confiding to me her grim health prognosis (Yes, I have a thing about friends). Although she didn't attend again, she thanks me for keeping her on the mailing list of notices. I often bumped into her during this time while shopping at Loblaws. I will miss her wit and broad knowledge and humanity.

Renie has been colleague and friend for 50 years, an individual with a most interesting take on nearly every subject. Her childhood experiences, wide reading and extensive travels gave her a singular and informed position on many topics. Her deep interest in the progress of her students gave them an exceptional experience which they are likely to remember still. Renie, we will miss you. We hope that the next part of your journey will fulfill all your hopes and dreams. -Diana and Maggie Cooper

Dear Renie. She was a colleague and a great friend of my late Mother ( Mary Ann Boyle), and subsequently of me . Interestingly, she has been in the forefront of my thoughts this past week, especially when I didn't receive her annual e-mail summary of her year. I sent her an e-mail on the 19th, having had no idea that she had died just the day before.I am in BC and regret that I am unable to be at her memorial service today. Renie will live on in many memories, including those in her wonderful book. I convey my deepest sympathy to Shirley and extended family, on behalf of myself and my extended family.

A friend here in Victoria let us know this a.m. that Renie died. I sent Renie a Christmas card and so wondered if she was unwell. So sorry to hear of her recent ill health and death. My condolences. I was to visit with her this last May but the weather prevented me from getting to Ottawa. I did however stay at her home after her surgery. Renie was initially at the Women's group in James Bay and then a member of a book group. I went to St. John's School where she taught but not when she taught there. Sincerely, Lynda Boyd
