Brian Douglas Ward & Mary Frances (Fran) Ward

Tragically in a car accident on December 4, 2016.  Brian (born April 15, 1946, Toronto, Ontario, Walter Ward & Elizabeth Ward, nee Jackson) and Fran (nee Stone, June 18, 1949, Kingston, Jamaica, Deryck Stone & Dorothy Pasques, nee George) are deeply loved and missed by their children Eric, Michelle (Sean Walter) and Ryan (Alex Glover), and their siblings Robert Ward (Maureen Armstrong), Peter Stone (Caryl Malcolm) and Philip Stone (Carol Stone, nee Bethune).  They were adored by their grandchildren Martin, Nicole, Daniel, Laurel, Jonah, Jackson and George with whom they swam, played, read, and cuddled. They had cherished relationships with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews (in Ontario, Alberta, BC, and the US), Susan Ward (nee Barrett), the Glover, Walter, and Ambrose families, and their many friends.

Brian and Fran dedicated their lives to their children, grandchildren and the children of Canada.  Brian’s work started with the YMCA in Beiruit and then Montreal.  He became Executive Director of the Canadian Council on Children and Youth, social policy advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office, and Director General of the Federal Children’s Bureau, among many other roles.  He was particularly proud of leading Canada’s efforts to establish and honour the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.  In retirement he volunteered with the Canadian Paediatric Society and Ottawa Therapy Dogs (with his companion Daisy).  Fran was a professional writer, editor, teacher, then fundraiser for the University of Ottawa and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation.  In retirement, she returned to school, excelling in an M.Ed in literacy and cultural studies.  She volunteered tirelessly with the OrKidstra, St. Mary’s Home, Mothercraft, newcomers to Canada, and as a full time grandma.

Brian and Fran’s integrity, generosity, warmth, and kindness are known to many who visited their lakehouse or experienced their friendship, mentorship, and advocacy.

Brian and Fran, we cherish our memories of you and are so proud of you and the lives you lived.  We are deeply saddened that we lost you so soon.
