Dorothy Genevieve Senior

(Harnett)

August 21, 1929 –May 26, 2013

After a courageous battle with cancer, Dorothy passed away peacefully on May 26, 2013, surrounded by her loving husband Russ, son Richard (Susan), and daughters Judith (Ian) and Jennifer (Russell). Dorothy was a loving grandmother of Christopher, Samantha, Mac, Ben, Danielle, Cassie, Lexie, Nicholas, Maia, and Tessa. Beloved daughter of the late William and Annie Harnett. Dorothy was born in Twillingate, Newfoundland and obtained her Diploma in Nursing from St. John’s General Hospital in November 1950. She was one of the first nurses in the province to join the Royal Canadian Air Force then spent the next four years working in Europe. Upon her return to Canada she was posted to a NORAD radar site located in Foymount, Ontario, where she met and married Russ. The next few years found Dorothy to be a very busy wife and mother of three. With postings in both Europe and Canada, her final posting was to Ottawa, which became home. Dorothy chose to return to the workforce and in due course joined the staff at Algonquin College where she set up a series of basic and refresher courses in the then termed “Health Care Aide Program” in the city and the surrounding areas.  She was a pioneer in setting up the very successful Gerontology Program for the college.  She was extremely popular with both staff and students and was truly proud of her accomplishments there. Dorothy and Russ retired to their home amongst the trees in Arlington Woods. Dorothy continued to follow her passion advocating for the elderly by volunteering as a board member at both the Bronson Home and the Council on Aging.  She was an enthusiastic and skillful bridge player belonging to a number of clubs, both serious and social, over the years. She was a proud observer of her family and grandchildren. She also maintained her fashion leader status around the neighbourhood. In the words of her bridge group friends, her “sense of humor, happy smile and sense of style” will be missed by all. The family would like to extend their thanks to the wonderful care Dorothy received from both Dr. Saar in Ottawa and Dr. Jinnah in North Bay as well as the staff on A1 at the North Bay Regional Health Center.
