Full name:
Robert Ogilvie,

Born July 24, 1916 Ottawa Ontario

Flying Officer RCAF World War II

Air worthiness inspector, Aeronautical Engineering Division, Department of Transport

Denzell was the son of Robert James Ogilvie of Gloucester, and Lucinda Orilla (Eastman) of Kars. Denzell had two younger brothers, Gordon and Eldon, both now deceased, and a younger sister Eileen Eva Preece. He is missed by his wife of 69 years Margaret (Murray) in Ottawa, and five children, Robert Murray Ogilvie (Robin), Caledon, Wanda Claire, Ottawa, William Ivan, California, Heather Elaine (Brian Charles), and Charles Andrew Warren, Ottawa. Three grandchildren have brought great joy to his life, Marie Valiquette, Robert Ogilvie and Sylvia Charles. More recently he enjoyed visits from two great grandsons, George and Patrick.

From an early age Denzell was fascinated with aircraft and this became a lifelong passion. He began by making model airplanes. At age 11 he walked from Westboro to Uplands with another cousin when Lindberg arrived in the Spirit of St Louis. While in High School, he worked for Thomas Photographic Studio in Ottawa part time. Later he qualified as a toolmaker and spent his earnings on flying lessons. There were jobs in Aircraft plants in Montreal (Canadian Vickers) and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Clark Ruse).

His WW11 service was in Coastal Command flying Canso’s and Liberators over the Pacific and Atlantic. Denzell left the RCAF after V.J. Day 1945.

Denzell possessed skills in many areas. His carpentry skill was evident in homes in Rosemere, Quebec, and Ottawa. He was constantly repairing cars and aircraft as a hobby and built his children an extensive model railway system. There were always part time projects in addition to work. While with Canadair he earned his commercial flying license and bought a Piper J 3. However, his ambition of pursuing a career as a bush pilot was soon overcome by the needs of his growing family. Denzell later worked for DND in Ville La Salle and DOT in Ottawa. Many trips to aircraft plants in Canada and the United States gave him interesting times before retirement at age 62. While in Ottawa he returned to his airplane hobby, rebuilding a Stinson, and later moving on to a Cessna and finally a Mooney. His retirement years were filled with flying trips across Canada, the USA and locally and in building a cottage at Bob’s Lake. He also taught himself about computers, building his first from a kit in the early eighties. He continued to “log-on” until weeks before his passing.

Denzell lived the last few years in Robertson House, Ottawa. He passed away peacefully, in no pain, in his 97th year on May 1st at Queensway Carleton Hospital.
