Shawn Donald Holmesdale, 39, of Ottawa, ON and Kingston, NS passed unexpectedly on February 27, 2013.

Shawn lived life to the fullest; he was a family man who loved his wife and children most of all.  Shawn was driven and enjoyed setting and attaining goals in both his personal and professional life.  He was dedicated to his work; his most recent 13 years were with Quest Software/Dell where he was greatly respected and liked by the hundreds of people who worked for him worldwide.  He spent his free time sailing with his wife and children on Lake Ontario, golfing, scuba diving, biking, skiing and table tennis.  He was a wine enthusiast, aspiring sommelier and he always appreciated great food and a fine bottle of wine with family and friends.  “Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.”

Shawn is survived by his loving wife of 16 years Ruthanne (Houghton) and beautiful children Sarah (age 5) and Jackson (age 4) (Ottawa, ON), parents Don and Lynda Holmesdale (Kingston, NS), brother Thad (Lisa) Holmesdale (Aylesford, NS), as well as his in-laws David and Sandra Houghton (Kentville, NS) and brother in-law David-James Houghton (Ottawa, ON).

“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain

We know that Shawn would want us to cherish our fond memories of times spent together.  A visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of the Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Rd. at Roosevelt on Monday, March 4th from 1-3 & 6-8 pm.  Shawn would be pleased for donations to be made to your charity of choice, in his name.

(nee Ludlow)

Born May 2 1927, died February 26, at the age of 85, at the Peter D Clarke Long Term Care Centre, Ottawa, Ontario.  Daughter of the late William (Billy) and the late Lillian Ludlow, sister of Jane Smith of New Zealand. Loving and adored wife of Ian Robert Glanville Syme, who predeceased her in 2010.  Mother of Philippa, Roderick, Hilary and John (Halina), grandmother to Justin, Sarah, Angelika, Patrick, Benjamin, Lydia, Olivia, Isabel, Jaime, Melissa and Charlotte, and great-grandmother to Leighla, Ian and Ashwen.  Norma was born in Ilford, Essex County in the UK and was educated at the Central School of Drama in London, England.  She met Ian on a train, while working as a teacher.  They married in 1949 and emigrated to Canada in 1953 with two young children, settling in Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec, where they raised their four children. Norma became an active volunteer in her community, visiting the same group of fostered psychiatric patients in St. Antoine over many years, recording audio books for the CNIB, helping new Canadians learn English and leading a Brownie pack. Her love of acting and the theatre continued through her reading of plays for CBC radio and performances in and direction of many productions of the Hertel Mountain Theatre and, later, the Domino Theatre in Kingston. In the 1970s, she taught voice and speech classes at Concordia University in Montreal. She and Ian enjoyed travel as a way to see new places and maintain important old friendships. After a brief period residing in Toronto, Norma and Ian retired, in 1987, to an idyllic lakefront house in Bath, Ontario. Here, Norma enjoyed daily swims in the summer and made warm lunches for rosy-cheeked grandchildren in from skating in the winter. Norma loved to dance and was a classically trained singer and voice teacher. She enjoyed reading, painting and gardening and she practiced yoga for many years.  Music was a big part of Norma and Ian’s lives and they imparted a love of the arts in their children. A loving mother and grandmother, Norma’s gentle ways, her kindness, creativity and sense of fun will always be remembered. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Peter D Clarke Long Term Care Centre and particularly the exceptional staff in Willow West for the loving care they have shown Norma all these years.  Thanks to Kathy for being part of the care-giving team.  A private service and celebration of Norma’s life will be held at a later date.  For those who wish, donations to Peter D Clarke Family and Friends Council (9 Meridian Place, Nepean, ON K2G 6P8) or the Alzheimer Society.
