July 1, 1924 – May12, 2013
The only child of Gladys & William Bradley, John was born in Saskatoon, Sask, July 1st, 1924. He attended Albert College, in Belleville for high school. From there he joined the Army Signal Corps as a signalman, and participated in the liberation of Holland. His army decorations include the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945, and the Canadian Forces decoration and clasp. Repatriated to Canada at the end of the war, he graduated from the University of Toronto in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering. Following that, he joined the Army Signal Corps, retiring as a major in 1975 to become the Superintendent of International Relations in the Telecommunications and Electronics Branch of Transport Canada.
John was a founding member of the Canadian Club of Rome, and served as its secretary. In retirement, he was a long-serving volunteer at the Canadian War Museum where he delighted visitors with personal tours, and proudly pointed out in the museum’s painting where he, as a child, had watched the unveiling of the Vimy Memorial. John also volunteered at the archives of the National Museum of Civilization. In Nov, 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for “outstanding service work and responsibility to the country”.
Friends and family remember John’s love of international travel and knack for finding hardware shops, markets, and the best local restaurants. He was happiest finding and restoring woodworking tools – making sure they always left his hands in better condition than when they were acquired.
John passed away at the Ottawa Civic Hospital after a brief decline. He is survived by his wife Constance (Connie) nee Bracken, and his two children Richard (Elisabeth Quan), and Susan Jarvis (Peter). His memory will forever remain strong and happy for his grandchildren Philippa and John Gordon Jarvis. Friends may visit at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Rd (at Roosevelt) on Tuesday, May 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, May 15 at 1p.m. A private interment in Cobourg, ON will follow at a later date.
Thank you to the caring and compassionate staff of the Ottawa Civic Hospital and the Amica of Westboro. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian War Museum and Museum of Civilization are appreciated in lieu of flowers.
