John Scammell passed away peacefully on Friday at the age of 88 years at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre in Ottawa. John is predeceased by his wife Margaret “Peggy” (Kierstead) in 2004. Also predeceased by bothers Douglas, Bertram and Maurice, and sister Winifred. He is survived by his sons: Robert (Debbie), Glen, and Andy (Sandy); his grandchildren: Shey, Sim, Emma, Josh, Sean (Gillian), Monique; and his great-grandchildren Alexis, Sydney, Jordan, Alex and Aaron. John was born in Pinder, New Brunswick to the late John and Hannah (Moorehouse) Scammell. He was trained and flew as a Navigator with the RCAF from 1942 to 1945, and completed a tour of operations on the Lancaster Aircraft of Bomber Command WWII. He joined Air Traffic Control, Toronto Centre in 1949 and became a licensed controller in 1957 working as Chief Controller of the Gander, Newfoundland Tower. In 1960 John was appointed to Air Traffic Control, Department of Transport in Ottawa where he worked until his retirement in 1980. The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at the Perely Rideau Veterans Health Centre and the Stillwater Creek Retirement Community for their dedication and compassionate care. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.), Nepean on Friday, October 5, 2012 from 4 p.m. until time of service in the chapel at 5 p.m. A family interment will be held at a later date at Pereaux Baptist Church, Pereaux, Nova Scotia.
