It is with deep sorrow we announce the death of Brian Holmes at the age of 77. After a short illness, Brian died suddenly on January 11, 2012, in hospital, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving and attentive wife of 52 years, Joan (nee McMullan). He was a proud and enthusiastic father to Michael (Kim Roberts) and Christopher (Janet Sullivan) and Kanina (James Bronson). The lights of his life included his seven grandchildren: Chris; Paul; Emily; Kalem, Ayden, Inara and baby Theodore. Brian was born in Powell River, British Columbia to the late Margaret Johnson and the late Leonard Holmes. He will be fondly remembered by his younger siblings, Denise (Dennis Hird) and Allan (Ruth Klassen). Brian had many passions including photography, nature, curling, investing and golf. He will be dearly missed by his many friends with whom he shared his adventures. He moved to Ottawa in 1965 and pursued a varied and successful career with the federal civil service as a professional engineer. Brian will be missed for his large heart and the sparkle in his eyes, the gateway to his unqualified optimism and unbridled curiosity. To him, the best road was the one untraveled. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Parkwood Presbyterian Chuch, 10 Chesterton Drive, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club.
